Your insurance card, without the phone call

The short version

  • The Doctor Insurance One app is out for iPhone. It is free.
  • You can see every policy in your household, your member ID, and the documents we have sent you.
  • You can ask for your insurance card, your Form 1095-A, a new primary doctor, or a list of doctors who take your plan, without calling.
  • You can message your agent and send a photo.
  • You can compare plans with no account at all, which is useful if you are not a client yet.
  • Getting in needs your phone number and your date of birth. There is no password.
  • iPhone only for now. There is no Android version yet.

Why we built it

Most of the calls we take are the same four questions. What is my member ID? Can you send me my insurance card? Can I change my doctor? What does my plan actually cover?

Not one of those needs a phone call. Every answer is already in your file. It only needed a way to reach you, and the thing everybody already has in their hand is a phone.

What you can see

Every policy in the household, together: health, Medicare, life, dental and vision. Each one shows what you pay each month, with the subsidy already taken off, rather than the sticker price of the plan. Tap one and you get your member ID, the effective date, who is covered, and what the plan covers: the copay for a doctor’s visit, what a generic prescription costs, the deductible.

Anything your agent has shared with you sits on the policy it belongs to. An ID card. A letter from the carrier. Your 1095-A when it is time to do your taxes.

What you can ask for

There is a Support tab, and instead of a blank box asking you to describe your problem, there are seven things people actually ask us for: change my doctor, get a list of doctors, request my ID card, request Form 1095-A, update my payment method, quote a different plan, or something else in your own words.

Each one becomes a job your agent works, and you can watch it move (received, being worked on, needs you, done) and reply on it. Whatever we send back arrives right there.

You can also just look at plans

Open the app without signing in and it will ask you three things: your ZIP code, how many people are on your tax return, and roughly what your household makes in a year. No account, no Social Security number, nothing to pay. You will see the companies that sell in your county and what their plans cost with the help you qualify for already applied.

If you are not our client yet, that is a reasonable way to find out what you would be paying. Prices are an estimate. Those three questions never ask anybody’s age, and age changes the price, and the Marketplace makes the final decision from a full application. But it is a real answer in about two minutes.

What it does not do

  • It does not take payments. You can update the card we have on file by photographing it, but there is nothing to pay inside the app.
  • It only shows what we hold for you. A policy you bought elsewhere will not be in it.
  • It is iPhone only. If you are on Android, nothing changes. Call us and we do it by phone, the way we always have.
  • Only the main person on the policy can sign in. The app opens the whole household’s coverage, so it is the primary insured who gets in.

How to get in

  • Search the App Store for Doctor Insurance One and install it. It is free.
  • Tap Sign in and enter the phone number we have on file and your date of birth.
  • We text you a six-digit code. Type it in.
  • Choose a four-digit PIN, or use Face ID, so that nobody who picks up your phone can read your coverage.

If it tells you we do not recognise you, it is nearly always an old phone number on your record. Ring us and it is a one-minute fix.

The bottom line

Nothing about how we work has changed. You still have the same agent, and you can still call and get a person. What is new is that on the evenings and weekends when you cannot, your insurance card, your member ID and your plan’s details are already in your pocket.

There is a full walk-through, with pictures of every screen, on our app page. And if you would rather we did it with you, call (800) 305-7709 and we will stay on the line while you get set up, in English or in Spanish.
